I have detected an issue at the stump. There is oozing of moisture coming out of the stump a few inches above the ground. There appears to be two spots on the stump that this is happening. What if anything can be done?

ive had to cut the stump away from the plant, you want to make sure all of the rot(brown color) is gone after doing so, so you might have to cut off some secondaries also. depending on how early it was caught. after cutting use bleach 1 part bleach 10 parts water then dust with sulfur. also put fan on it to help dry it out. this is what I do but everybody does things different. also cntryboy may have a better method than myself. so hopefully he will chime in and explain a different approach to saving it.but this is the way I have dealt with foaming stump and was still able to grow kins over 700 lbs.

First, a picture REALLY halps people help you.

If you have secondaries that are the same size as your main or bigger coming directly into the main, I cut them off. In my opinion they push too much through the stump which causes it to be harder to get it healed up.

Then you will have to split the stump along the grain to save it.

Remove any soft or brown tissue you find.

Split it at a point on the top where you can get some sanitizer down into it and on the bottom at the lowest spot in order to drain out the sanitizer.

Now for the sanitizer. I use baquacil pool oxidizer (27% peroxide) it is the same strength as zerotol and a LOT cheaper. Be sure to use plastic/rubber gloves when handling it or it WILL give you a chemical burn!

If you can't find pool oxidizer, A beauty supply store #40 Clear developer is about 12% peroxide and better than store brand (which is 3%).

I have heard many people use 10% bleach. I have never used it.

Whatever you use. Pour it directly into the stump and flush it out 3 or 4 more times.

Put a cover over it to keep the rain/water out of it.

Then if you can, put a fin blowing directly into the slice you made to dry it out.

Repeat flushing twice a day until it dries out, then dust with sulfur or your favorite fungicide.

Good Luck!

Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

If you follow what CB said above, even if all use is regular peroxide, you should be able to save it. I'd personally dust it captan after surgery, and it would have a fan blowing on it the rest of the season. I had 7 foamers last year, 6 of them made it.
