Danville Va.

This is my second attempt. My last on a few years back was already rotting by end of Aug to start of Sept. No where near Oct. So when should I put my seedlings in the ground?

Unless you are growing under mini greenhouse or the like...April 26 is a good date to shoot for putting plants in the ground...BTW, I'm in Waynesboro,Va.

We start them about 2 to 3 weeks prior to the last frost because we have mini greenhouses and can protect against cold weather. If you can't protect against cold, start them after any danger of frost.

Growth wise the actual fruit will usually mature and stop growing between 90 and 120 days after it is pollinated (they tend to go toward the 90 day mark or less in hotter climates), and for the most part the plant grows an average of 50-60 days before it will set a fruit. So if you count 140-180 days backward from your weigh-off will tell you an approximate time to start and have a pumpkin grow to its full potential if all things go very well.

If the plant and pumpkin are healthy they will last until they freeze in the winter if you keep them out of the direct sun and they don't get too hot. We have had pumpkins cut off of the vine in August and still in perfect condition after Thanksgiving.

On my first attempt I had the same problem and maybe the same thought process. But, it is not a timing thing if you want to grow big, it is a keep my plant happy thing...if you know what I am saying.. My thoughts

#1.I think by May 1 you will be clear of all frost and could set out your plants with no protection. However, the warmer you can keep them at night regardless of frost will help your plant get going.

#.Cntryboys advice is wise.

#3.Getting one to the Va State Fair in early Oct. = take care of the plant..SHADE,fungicides,water,fertilizer,insecticides,etc.. Use Daconil for a fungicide at least bi-weekly. Daconil is inexpensive and works great for me. These practices can gain you another month on your plant.
