Pictures should be up tomorrow on my diary.

Came home tonight to find a hole in the blossom end. It is about 2 inches from the blossom and is about 3/4" long and 1/8" wide looks like it is about 3/4" deep or so. It is in a direction perpendicular to the ribs. There is a dill ring type of indention circling the blossom where this split occurred. Can Dill Rings develop that close to the Blossom?

I probed the hole a little bit with a piece of straw and it didn't seem to go into the cavity but I wasn't pushing very hard. Any thoughts on the prognosis for this pumpkin? What should I do to try and manage this and nurse it home to weigh off?

This is pretty much my only chance for a Personal best so I am freaking out. Any advice would be appreciated.

captain,, i just looked at your diary pic,, clean it good with peroxide and or a lite bleach and water solution,,, put some sulpher dust or captan dust on it ,, keep it dry,, hopefully it will heal itself,,, hope the best for you, curt

i agree gotta bleach that sucker also get it dry. I would go a spep further and put some silicone to plug up that hole if it hasn't hit the cavity then your good. you can peel the silicone off later. just my two cents

Is the silicone just to keep air and water out or does it help hold the pumpkin together?

dont use silicone unless it gets worse.. should heal rite up,, only in a last case scenerio,, as it will classed as a dmg.. fruit ,,

Its getting worse as the Pumpkin grows. 2" long and maybe 1.25" deep now. Its widening also. It still doesn't look like its in the cavity though.

Thats a wild one.Usually blossum splits start on the inside and when you see it the show is over.That one is going to do as it wishes.Hopefully its thick there.youll know in the next few days one way or the other

Dont use silicone unless theres a hole into the seed cavity.You can probe it with a piece of broom straw to check.If you have a hole then plug it till it stops growing-it wont make it till halloween.Latex caulk works good on a small opening

When I thump it the pumpkin sounds more hollow on the blossom end than on the rest of the pumkin which is probably not a good sign. It seems like slapping a bunch of silicone in there could create an enviroment for bacteria and rot. The only reason I would do it is if it could stop the split from expanding. I am kind of doubtful that it would help much in that regard. I need to make it to September 7th for the Puyallup fair. Crossing my fingers.

Yep its toast. Crack through to the cavity this evening. I jammed it full of silicone. Maybe it will still gain a few more pounds and I can get an unofficial weight.
