I have always grown in a christmas tree formation and I have allowed the first two secondaries (essentially on the stump) to form tertiary vines going behind the stump. The thought was to have more plant behind the pumpkin. With my new emphasis on small, focused vines I wonder if I am growing too much salad. Would the removal of the secondaries from the cotelydon area lead to a more focused primary vine?

Check out this link which contains details of the Harps growing methods used for the 1725.
It would seem they do just the same

i personally think theres no one way thats that much better than the other.its just a matter of ones past experiences and preferences. either way the main purpose is to grow plant first /pumpkin later on.
