Subject:  Which pumpkin is the keeper based on shape?

Looking for help from experienced growers. Have two pumpkins established on one plant and I'm trying to decide which is the keeper.
Twelve feet from the stump I've got a football shaped fruit. Three feet further out there is a near spherical fruit. Both are approx 10 days post pollination.
Is there any correlation between early fruit shape and shape or size of the final product? How large do you let the "chosen" fruit grow before kulling the backup?
Thanks for the info,
Michael

Just a novice myself so I guess someone more experienced will be along soon. I understand it to be that longer 'oblong' fruits produce the bigger pumpkin.

I concur with Mark. I always take the longer fruit. The tall round pumpkins are nice but I always am disappointed with their weights at the weigh off. Long ones seem to weigh heavy for me.

huge fruit have been grown on both round and football shaped early fruit. i myself like a longer wider fruit as they tend to go heavier and dont seem to have blossom splits as much as the round tall ones.also the lower wider ones dont need as much vine maintenance.
sometimes though your choices are made for you and you go with what ya got.
