i have been reading diff site about tilling and how deep some site say you should till 3 to 4 ft deep is this right because my patch is till about 10 in deep excep were the main stump is at it about 3ft deep by 3ft wide 4ft long for compost ?????

I would like to see the tiller that goes 3-4 feet deep. Most only go 8-10 deepest. They may subsoil that deep but not till.

You should plow if possible 12 inchs maybe 16 inchs,most tillers are 6 to 8 inchs deep

Your Right it says 3 to 4 feet,Been growing 15 years never heard this before.That would be impossible for me I only have 2 feet of soil on a land filled (Concrete, bricks stone)wetland.Theres no farmers around here that kind of equipment.Thats too much work(money) roots will grow horizontal When they hit bottom,you will be fine with 8 to 12 inchs of loose Organic soil.

We just ripped one of our old almond orchards to 8' deep. It takes a house sized bulldozer and a car sized shank. It breaks up the hard pan and brings up volkswagon sized dirt clods. Our john deere tractors have rototill attachments. Those are only 8' wide and 18" deep. I geuss all this depends on your soil. -Kevin

That would be nice if it could bust up the huge carst rock we are sitting on. I'll just have to go up with more dirt and compost. It may take a few years before I have a real competion patch, and a lot of trips from the horse field with the wheelbarrow! BSD, David

They're really awesome to watch. It felt like a week long earth quake. My father-in-law took a picture of my 1.5 yr old daughter and it makes her look like a field mouse. I wish the dozer would fit into my fenced AG patch. I brag about the equipment but I still gotta do a lot by hand. Nothin' like gettin' yur hands dirty. Peace, Wayne they ship bulldozers this big in parts...most the time.

When I pull my plant at the end of the season I notice most of the root growth is in the top 4in of soil. Everything seems to shoot our laterally. Only the stump root goes down deeper (2'). And I have sandy soil that should be easy for the roots to grow into. I don't know that tilling more than a foot would do any good.
