Seed stock crosses, ie; 1000.5 Stock X open, is that the same as 1000.5 Stock X self ? I also see alot of growers discussing a seed stock named "menting" is that a growers' name as others are? Or does that refer to something different? If that doesn't make sence that's OK, all systems normal! BSD David

Big Show Dog, I am just a second year grower but I believe the open means that the pumpkin was naturally pollinated and they are not sure of the pollinator. The term menting I am not sure about. Joe Z.

When a fruit is "selfed", that means it is pollinated by that plant (the plant the fruit is growing on).A lot of times when a grower starts an early plant (maybe for a fair or other event), that is the only available pollen in his or her patch, so it has to be selfed.
If that is your only plant, and you let the bees pollinate it, I suppose that would be a "selfed, open pollination".

As they have said a selfed pollination would be a female that is pollinated with a male(s) from the same plant that the pumkin is growing on ---- an open pollination would be a unknown pollinator (ie the female flower opened in the AM before it was noticed and the Bees may have already gotten in there so you can not be sure where the pollen came from)- even if the female was tied shut and you use pollen from an open male flower that would technically be an open pollination because a bee may have visited the male flower already and dropped off pollen from another plant !! - so in order to ensure it is a controlled pollination the female as well as the male flowers need to be tied up prior to opening and using for pollination !

Thanks, Joe Z, Zappa and JDFan. Some times as you take in alot of new information in a short period of time you get a bit confused. After I posted I thought better of it!!! I was tring to define my seeds that I have and ran across this ponder!

JDFan is correct about the bees. Even if you only have one plant in the patch, if the pollination is uncontrolled, it is considered an open, as the bees may have access to another source of unknown pollen.

Another term you didn't mention is "sib" or "sibbed." This is for a controlled pollination between two plants grown off the same seed. Say you grow a 1725 Harp, and so does your neighbor. You use controlled males from your neighbor's plant to pollinate the female on your plant. Your fruit then becomes the 1725 Harp x sib.
