When should I put up sun protection? How should I do it. I was thinking 4 stakes with a light colored bed sheet covering it.

Just throw a bed sheet over it at beachball size. Where in MA you from?

I'm from Kingston, MA on the south shore

Yep, regular bed sheet thrown right on it. It's all I have used for the last few years. Doesn't hurt the pumpkin and much easier than making shade structures.

If the shade gets wet, you might want to consider changing it for a dry one, or, put a plastic tarp on top of it, to keep the moisture away from the pumpkin
