looking for some help, stump just started to foam is there anything i can put on it being caught on an early stage or what do i do know ??? thanks in advance

Pap says drill holes in the stump !!... so I did and that was 10 days ago and my stump has a few big holes in it but is dry and in decent shape now . But Pap was right the holes allowed the foam to drain out and the stump to dry, if the foam cant drain out the stump will turn to mush

I was wondering should I cover the big hole in the side of my stump where it was mush and I drilled and fingered the foam and mushy part out. I can stick 3 fingers in my stump, but it is hanging in there, keep the weed down and the air moving around it

You have a few options,,

First,, dig down a few inches by the stump,get close to the bottom of the crown,,, once there you will have to make a small hole(1/4 by 1/4 maybe even a bit bigger) there should be a bunch of fluid that runs out,,, now here is the catch with foaming stumps the foam will go down the vines,so you will have to go down your main vine a few feet and make one more hole so the fluids can run out.

Second,, take a knife and make a slice up the stump,say 6 inches long and one inch wide,, once done scrap out any foam or rot spots,, rub area with 10 to 1 water ratio with bleach, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide,, right after apply captan or sulfur powder,, then put fan on it,,, you may still have to make a small hole down the vine as noted in the above sentence,

3rd,,, Just cut your losses and get rid of the stump,,, because you'll get rid of the foam up the vine risk,,


This year I have had two foaming stumps,, in my opinion don't mess around with option one,,, do option two,, really get it opened good so air can get in there,,,

because the foam comes from the stumps crown(the very bottom),doing it that way will give the foam very little chance to climb the vine because the foam will all drain from the big hole going up the vine,,,

best of luck,, even if you do lose the stump don't give up,, as I say,,,who need a high tech stump anyways..
there have been huge pumpkins grown from plants with no stumps.

first thanks for the advice punkinologist & mellowpumpkin, I did try option two made a 6" x 1" opening on the stump as soon as I stuck the knife in alot of juice can out. Rinsed inside and outside out with bleach/water,dried, powdered entire area with sulfer. Did not find any mush or rotten spots. Hopefully that did the job. Thanks again.

my stump has 2 main vines, it looks like a y coming out the ground. My one pumpkin is on one side of the stump and on the other side of the stump is all plant and no pumpkin,
However now I want a pumpkin to set on the no fruit side , because I think I may be losing my stump sooner or later,
i'm guessing my 1 plant will become 2 plants when the stump goes.
Therefore i'm wondering if its a good idea to go ahead and let one set on the side that has no fruit?

also my pumpkin that is set is about 25 days and 70"cc and is terribly LOPSIDED , any input on this very unsymmetrical fruit?
