Thanks to everyone for takeing the time to answer my questions .I have been burrying my main vine, when i get close to where i will set a pumpkin i should stop this so the vine doesn't root (anchor) its self to the ground where the pumpkin will grow. This will aLlow the vine to rise up with the pumpkin YES/NO . And if it has rooted can i cut the rrot to allow it to move ..AGAIN THANKS..

Rybec..yes you want the vine to rise so as to avoid stem stress..BUT..don't just let the pumpkin pull on the vine...prop it up with pieces of styrofoam..or ..I use a piece of kids swimming noodle in the beginning.

Rybec, Don't stop burying the vine. Otherwise, I like your plan. You can cut the root. When the pumpkin is big enough to raise the vine, cut the tap root.

its a very good idea to go back and uncover the soil off the main ( and the first three ft of sides off the main as well )once squash vine borer season is past in week or two in most areas on the east coast. that main vine needs to get air. burying is only done to help early tap root growth and help keep borers put. pap

I will be following your advise to uncover the main in a few weeks. When uncovering, what do you use for that? Water, Water with a little pressure, hands ?
Also, What happens to the roots that end up being uncovered?
Also, Do you just uncover the top of the main and kind of leave it tucked in underneath? Or do you completely uncover the main, top and bottom?

rybec, a few roots will have to be sacrificed (cut) to allow the vine to rise to the size of yer pkn. If left buried, the roots will prbly rip yer pkn off the vine!!! Support under the main b/4 and after the pkn is also needed!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne

Couldn't stand it anymore. I uncovered my stump and the parts of my main vine between the leaf nodes. Very healthy vine, I was scared. Now hopefully I can keep the damn SVB's out of it.
