Ok, so i ask alot of questions,i want to do things right.Should i cut away all the small leaves and larger leaves close to the stump? how much of the stump needs to be clear? And i have seen some people cover that area with a small table ,is this to help keep it dry and out of the sun? pro's/con's .... THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE HELP THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN.....BOB

I will gradually cut small leaves off of the stump as the plant grows. Once the vine has pushed out over about 10-12 feet and there are plenty of secondaries, I will clear big and small leaves off of the stump- so that it looks like a plucked chicken. I do this because these are the older leaves and this is generally where I see powdery mildew start up. We do not have a lot of foaming stump issues here, so I cannot speak to this. But I have never had stump issues with this practice either.

I am no expert, but here's what I have been told from a local long term grower, and it has been working well for me.

Rybec. I had a small split (about one inch long) on the crown. I sprayed it with 6% peroxide and packed with Captan fungicide, every 3 days until it was completely healed (and I still look at it daily). I covered it to keep the rain off.

I'll have to defer to someone with more experience on how much vegetation to remove from the crown. I only removed the small growth that was under the BIG leaves and was doing anything but restricting air and my ability to monitor the health of the vine.

Joe Z. Spray every cut or wound with 6% peroxide, then paste with Captan fungicide.

interesting. peroxide solution sounds good. i use it on me. never tried it on pumpkins. i will try a few and see what happens. i use captan a lot.
