Im putting up a silt fence today, actually Im in the middle of it now but rushed inside to ask a question.. How far from the vine does the fence need to be to provide wind protection? Do I put the (3 ft tall) silt fence 15 feet from the stump in anticipation of side vine length or do I put it closer and move it as the vine grows? Will a fence 15 ft away give enough protection? Appreciate any advice or helpful hints :) Tammy
Oh also do I drive in the stakes until the nylon material touches the ground or leave it up a few inches?

First year growing and I found out the hard way that when the plant is young you need to have wind protection close to the plant. My silt fence is close on one side and at the other end of the patch on the other. Next year after I put up my fence I will put up another piece close to the plant to protect it from the south wind. About 2-3 feet away. I lost my fastest growing plant to a wind storm.

Correct, but be prepared to move them often as the vines expand. Also watch that wind doesn't affect their placement. Black poly woven silt fence gets hot.

Tammy thanks for asking this question. I didn't think of having to keep moving fence. Also, is silt fence tall enough? I was thinking of something taller but how tall does silt fence come. What I'm use to seeing is only about 3ft. tall.

Tammy, Tremor nailed it...again!!! Close early, within 2-3 ft of plant, and be prepared to move it several times, until plant is established (lots of buried vines). CF, in my locale, I can find it in 3 or 4 ft sizes. Best buy so far was at a construction supply store. And it is ORANGE!!! Oh yeah, mesh to the ground, and I also put tposts, at each corner...strong winds combined w/too much moisture will let the wooden stakes fall down!!! Serious, !! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne

CF, try site search for "wind protection" or maybe someone could post a link to the link, for the major wall!!! I know some one remembers this!!! Peace, Wayne

well poop! I put the silt fence around the perimeter of the patch, too far away to offer much protection. Back to the drawing board. lol Thanks for the info :) Tammy

Tammy only unroll it a little bit to start..usually have ten foot spacings so you'll need a couple extra stakes to hold it up for a 4X4 box to start. then expand as the plant starts to run.

Is the orange construction fence better than the black silt fence?
