What is the benefit of adding gypsum to soil? I hear it mentioned alot but not really sure of its affects . Can anyone fill me in on this . Thanks for any info you can give me.

Gypsum loosens clay based soil and adds calcium and sulfur. Gypsum can also counteract high sodium levels while aiding in water penetration.

Adding to what DHertz said, gypsum is a way of adding calcium without raising the pH.

my soil is clay based for sure. where can i buy gypsum? how much should i add and is there a down side of applying too much?

local ag dealer is where i get mine. I think Lowes or Home Depot carries it too.

Without a soil test it's hard to say how much to add. You need to keep your K-Mg-Ca in balance.
