I was wondering what kind of squash grow to 500 pounds?
Are they edible like a pink banana or butternut? Or are they pumpkins that turned color? Just curious since I grow all the regular squash.

The ones you wanna grow are c. maximas.....like the Atlantic Giant, Burgess, Dill's Atlantic Giant, Show King, and some Hungarians. All so similar that Dill sells the same genetics under one name, Waterman under another....look for a Giant Pumpkin seed that throws squash.....a green fruit....make sure it has a history of making green fruit or was green and the male parent is from a plant that threw green fruit.(Its very important to make sure the male was growing green fruit if the seed has no projeny info.....)

There are known greenies. Without to much argument it may be said that squash are green and blue while pumpkins are cream to orange. They may in some instances come from the same seed.

If you are growing to eat stay with the many smaller sizes you know. If you have this undeniable urge to grow a monster you have started to seek information at the right place.

Just this little I have said can start off some lengthy spirited discussion in some quarters. This is just what I believe is an average good answer for you.

Thank you for your answers. I am trying to grow the pumpkins this year. If I get a green one I will let it grow also. I'll just have to make sure all of my blossoms are covered.
Thanks

.........this post reminds me of last summer when my daughter and i were growing our first ever atlantic giant pumpkin, my father comes over to the house one saturday morning to drop something off, so i take him out back to show him the hugh plant we had grown,he goes down to where the pumpkin is conceiled, so i roll back the tarp to uncover the beast.. he takes one look at it and calmly replies .."nice squash"....well now it seems to me the last time i saw him he was making plans to dig half his yard up so he can plant a giant "squash".....

I think it does get addicting just reading about it. Then nervous planning the growing of it. And scared starting the seeds and thinking that nothing will come up. And I haven't even received my seeds or books yet.

If ever you have a spare moment go for another load of "stuff" for your compost pile. Look around it is everywhere. My barber saves hair for me. Good stuff!! I bought him a nice shiney new garbage pail and a box of plastic bags. He said no one else ever ask. When I go for a haircut he gets a little of whatever I have in the garden.

Once or twice a year I get a couple bags of feathers from the Jewish chicken processor in a neighboring town. Good Stuff!! One time after putting the feathers on the compost pile and turning them in with a tiller my neighbor's bird dog went on point. He had to be tugged away from his hidden bird. It's the only Polish Bird Dog in the area.:)

Don's books will take away some of the fears and stirr up some more. He soft peddled or completely ignored lead as a cure for groundhogs, voles, moles and squirrels that like pumpkin seed. Some things can not be in books today. Hee Hee

docqipe **** I can get hair easily. What exactly does that do to your soil? I am going to try to get leaves from landscapers. I have one of those as a neighbor.
I want the books badly they won't be shipped out until the 11-12 and they take 7 days. We don't have moles or squirrels but sometimes we get gofers. Hopefully not this year. My worst pest is my husband's poodle she eats all my tomatoes, peppers, and other veggies she can get to before me. Last year she took bites out of my smaller pumpkins that I grew. Thanks for the advice; I will take it.
Pretty smart dog!!!

gophers and moles navigate with their nose. They do not like the smell of humans or their hair and if they burrow into hair the shorter clippings got into their fur and causes some serious itching! Moles are also hemophiliacs so if they scratch and break skin they bleed to death. as for poodle eradication..... my solution would not be well received.
