Looking through many of the diaries I notice that a lot of growers have their stump covered. Is this as a preventative measure, or is their a problem already going on ?

It's to avoid to wet it with the sprinklers.
A wet stump will get a fungus attack like Botrytis for example. Try to keep it as dry as possible.

Zappa, I use small baskets over my stumps to protect them from over-head watering and rain.

These ones work great and still allow for ventilation.

Zappa, no I do not. I over head water with sprinklers.

I only water the stump/crown area early when the plant is small and just starting to vine...after that the sprinklers take over.
