Is there any type of compost you should stay away from? I'm probably going to have to buy some compost my 1st year until I can get some going. We have a place close to home that sells different types and that's where I will get it.

Don't buy compost. Put an add on graigslist saying that you are looking for free compost. You will have more offers than you can use. As to what kind to use, I use horse manure.

Depending on what part of Texas you are in - you should be able to find someone willing to give you all the compost you could want - Here in El PASO - there are several people with stables and a couple of dairy farms nearby that have composted horse and cattle manure (usually composted with Hay or straw) that they are glad to have someone haul away - just check on Craigs List under the Farm and Garden section for compost and you should find some offers for free compost\manure.

Thanks for the suggestion about craigslist. I found 3 people close to the house with free manure/compost. They will even load it for me.

Has anybody ever tried rice hulls? I don't know how readily available they are to everyone but I believe I have access to a large amt. of it.
