Have a small split in the stem on one pumpkin - should I dry it as best as I can and fill it in wit captan paste??

Is the split into the pumpkin or only on the stem? Straight Daconil out of the bottle painted on/in the split works better. Try to keep the area dry until the daconil dries and the split begins to heal. Captan paste just never seems to dry.

If you can keep the stem dry it might be best to treat it with a dry material such as sulfur or captan. I've used Daconil (flowable) with good results too.

the split is just on the stem, hopefully it won't expand any further.

I have used Captan with good results. Just make a paste and let it air dry. Usually in less then two days it seems to seal off and allow split to semi heal.
