Subject: Are stem splits and grooves genetic?

What causes stem splits and more to the point stem grooves. They are not splits as of yet but the groves follow the stem down to the pumpkin. What are your thoughts on culling or not culling?

Some genetics are prone to stem splits (846 Jutras for instance), but environment does influence this. I think you're on the right track looking for signs to correct for.

Could it be too much water? I've taken the stress from the vine away. What else?

I saw the pics in your diary,,I have a couple of these every year. I think it is more that the fruit hit a period of aggressive growth or at least the plant did and this occurs. Keep them dry until they heal should be no problem.
Yes there are some genetics that cause frequent stem splits,,but those are the splits we think of that go into the fruit.
