Subject: under pumpkin

I was just wondering if i put down a solid rubber mat for the pumpkin to sit on if it would hurt the pumpkin cause of the no drainage or should i put holes in it. Thanks for all input Duane

I wouldn't use rubber, a piece of plywood with sand, or just sand on the soil would be better. Rubber wouldn't allow the pumpkins skin to stretch and slide over it as it grows, and the water would definately be a problem. I really don't think holes would help the situation much. Many growers use belt materials from paper mills under their fruit. I'd sooner go with nothing at all than try rubber.

Ive use styrofoam sheets, like you use for insulation, 4/8 foot sheets cut to size. I had them handy and it worked great. When I removed them at the end of the season, mice had chewed up the bottom, them dang mice. I hate them meses to pieces..lol

I went to my buddy that sells carpet.He gave me part of a roll of vinyl flooring.It is slick for the pumpkin to slide on.A few holes to drain and you are golden.

mill fabric... drains and keeps mice and that from coming up from underneath
