I noticed many grubs in the soil while burying vines. Are grubs bad for my patch? If so, what's the best way to get rid of them?

grubs mature into japense beetles, which are aweful for the patch, they also tend to eat root growth.

Grub-ex should kill them, but since it's late you're going to want to watch for adults. As of this morning the last of the living adults in our yard were on the corn. I sprayed them.... hope they enjoyed their last few hours, and paying for their meal.

The active ingredient in Grub-ex is Merit... if you are spraying Merit for any other reason (including SVB killing) then you should not have grubs OR beetles. Merit is also in Bayer Tree and Shrub...

Two years ago this place was grub to grub underground, all kinds and sizes and cutworms... Last year and this with the controlling of things with lots of Merit, almost none.

I have been using Merit 75 as a drench for an insecticide, every 14 or so days I re-apply. Should I use grub x where the plant is headed?

You can put the Merit75 down where the plant is going. If you already have GrubEx you can put it there, if you're spraying, that's an excellent way to empty the sprayer (spraying ahead, drenching)

Merit 75WP is what Grub-EX is made from. If it was applied to the entire patch before planting there would be no new (First Instar) grubs this year. If these grubs are large (Third & final instar) they will soon pupate & become adult beetles. They pose you no risk until then.

Steve, patch treated w/ merit, and re-applications have been done!! I still have Japanese beetles, as my pkn patch is in the middle of...who knows how many acres of untreated farmland!!! I have traps up (a long ways away from the pkn patch) , and will continue to use Merit 75WP...on a regular basis. Any other advice, for someone in my situation...ie...tryin to grow in the midst of thousands of acres of farm land??? Peace, Wayne
