another question.. I only have a very small space tilled up, can I let the vine run out onto the grass without burying it? Or do I need to dig up a 'path' where the vine grows?

if your only using it to pollinate with then just let it go into the grass. you are only after pollen

Tammy, I would cut the plant at ground level instead of pulling up, sometimes you can disturb the other plants roots. Just a thought.

Plants the run out onto the grass will be ok. rope them off so you dont hit somthing by accident with the mower. Keep in mind, the more vines you can burry the more roots that can grow and the bigger the pumpkin. But pumpkins will root down in grass well. The roots of the grass itself open us spaces for pumpkin roots to grow into.
