You can most grower don't. I grew one plant this year just as a pollinator. I will be pulling it in the next week or so.
You can make a better cross with pollen from a different plant.

We all try to plan for the RIGHT male on the day by any male flower is fine on "the day". Male pollen (not the flowers) can be frozen but not for long without very special care.

By RIGHT male I was refering to the cross the grower wants to make. We usuyally do select the male & grow it out. If space is lacking a grower might just plant a pollinator & limit the growth or just rip it out afterwards. This will be a "cross".
If you use a male flower from the same plant it's called a "self".
Using a different male plant of the same seed is a "sibling" pollination.
On the day your prime female opens no one splits hairs.
