Is it best to water the ground or the leafs, or both.

Water the soil. Until it starts getting hot it is best to keep the plant dry.

I'm with Jeremy on the overhead. Here in Virginia we have a very humid climate and watering the leaves only invites mildew etc. I use plenty of soaker hose and keep the leaves dry.

i use soaker hoses this year too, wrapped around and i lay more the bigger the plants get about 12" apart.

only time my leaves get wet is when i foliar spray or when mother natures feels like crying.

Be careful not to over water. That can encourage problems like pythium. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soaking wet.
