I had a minor stem split about a week ago. I treated with captan paste but the area around the split is becoming discolored now, like a light brown. The area on the vine is still nice and hard within the brown part but i'm hoping for tap roots soon in the event i lose the trunk.

It's natural for the area around the split to discolor. In time it may even develop and ugly knot or "growth" on the split area. It's all part of healing. How long is your main vine? You should start having roots under each leaf starting a couple days after that part of the vine touches the soil.

Strectched out straight it's probably 4 feet long but this particular vine has some crazy turns in it, part of which is caused by me re-directing it the way I want it to run. It's also a very aggresive vine as well.It just touched the ground a few days ago so I guess it shouldn't be long now before I see the tap roots.

Lis, if you are burying yer main vine,(or doing what you can to keep it on the ground) you should never "see" tap roots!!! At least try and get the vine close enough to the dirt so that the taps can reach it. You need to be encouraging yer vine to be on the ground so that it can form tap roots!!! Peace, Wayne

Well I had some trouble getting her to lay down initially, as it was in an upright position and became a bit top heavy so I encouraged it to lay down on it's side to prevent the stem split from getting any worse. Now she has touched down and is righting itself and heading in the right direction. Should I begin burying any portion of the vine that is now on the ground?
