Hi. I have heard at least ten feet out from stump for pumpkin. I should have a pumpkin at that range on each of our three big vines this time next week and think I will try to keep these if this is good. Will waiting for one further out make much difference or is ten feet sort of the magic number lol? I am also dealing with a 9 year old son who is my growing partner and he is getting quite impatient to see this year's pumpkins start growing hahahha - me too hahahhaa. We are using the seabird guana tea now and it is really working well for fertilizer - plants look amazing and are growing like crazy. I think of it as applied hydroponics hahaha. I even have the main root area in hydroponics soil - mostly ground coconut husk. I think the mad scientist aspects of growing these is probably the most fun of all hahaha. Thanks for any help on this and please - if you see any blaring mistakes in our photos tell us. It is only year too and we are very much amateurs at this. Steve

Steve, I would go ahead and pollinate at the 10' mark, but also pollinate the next couple on the main also. Several things come into play to help you pick a keeper!!! Position on vine, growth rate, possible aborts!!! Good luck & Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne

ten ft should be a minimum distance out. the more plant between the base and pumpkin the better for your food factory.

anything can (and will )happen to these plants during the season so the more food factory to work with ? the better chance for success.supposeyou have to remove part of the plant for any reason? that small plant is really efffected.

this year we have set our program up to allow for first pollinations at a minimum of 15 ft out by around the 25th to 27th of june.( please dont tell anyone -lol )any fruit that shows up earlier will only be allowed to grow thumb nail size so we can see the shape, then they get the knife.
