Just means the plant is stressed. So yes I guess overwatering could cause premature flowers.

Are these plants still in the pots...the heat in Florida has to be just cooking these roots.

No, they are in large containers in a screened in patio. I started to wonder if the 6500 K spectrum was getting filtered out due to the screen.

A pumpkins rooting system was never designed to grow in pots. So it becomes pot bound, The plant sends our growth hormones telling the plant this. So it rushes to produce a fruit and viable seeds. I have never been able to get a giant pumpkin to produce viable seeds from a pot

The Atlantic Giant is in a 30 gallon container, and the plant is starting to grow ok. My Big max looks like crap, and I damaged the roots a bit on the new Jack-O-lantern during the trnasplant, and now it is looking weak itself. The Atlantic Giant is the only one I transplanted close to the proper time or didn't damage any roots.

On a side note, I have a regular pumpkin still in a 4 inch peat pot for 2 months and it is alive. Skinny, kind of crappy, but it outlasted the one I transplanted.
