I have some plants that just sprouted about a week ago. They have two leaves each. Can I plant them in the patch now, providing I cover them with a cold frame at night? Also, what is a "true" leaf?

Yes you can plant them now if you cover them.

the two leaves you refer to are what we call seed leaves,(or cott leaves )

the first true leaf to develop is just starting to grow by the sound of your message.
remember when planting that the main will drop opposite of the side of the plant that the first true leaf is dropping. (the tip of the leaf will tell you which side of the plant the leaf will fall.) this is important because you dont want the main vine growing onto the lawn instead of out into the garden.

also, if your putting a plant out now in a cold frame be sure not to cook ithe plabt by not opening it to fresh air during hot days.

also,if you dont have a heat source inside the cold frame during early spring nights ? cover the cold frame with a blanket

you would really benefit by joining a club and hooking up with some experienced grower. purchasing books on the subject would also help. new growers have to much to learn to rely soley on bp postings.
