Can someone post a simple diagram of what the plot should look like with the new plants in? Meaning, do I plant all plants at one end a couple feet apart, and let them crawl down to the other end? Or should I put two plants on each end and have them grow toward each other? My area is approx 20 feet wide by 40 feet long.

You might want to put them at the middle to grow to the ends, or one at each end to grow towards each other.

If back to back in the middle give them 5-10 feet between them so you can put down a walkboard between them.

If going from each end you might offset one to one side and one to the other by 5-10 feet total, and have them 'pass' each other at the middle.

My patch is 25X40 and I plant one at each end about 3 feet in and point them at an angle so they pass each other.

This year I have added a 3rd plant in the middle and pointed it to meet the others in the middle.

So Ddo I actually want the vines to physically cross each other or do i train them to stay side by side without touching?

Don't cross vines... keep them on their own side of the world...

Grow from opposite ends...20 ft long will suffice...my plants will be 20ft wide by 25 ft long this year i hope...last year i couldn't get one plant to grow any longer once the kin started to grow anyways...grow them towards one another so you won't be walking in the the patch that much...i have left 5 ft from the edge this year and put in a hill maybe you could leave a 2ft space...I actually planted mine back to back in 2008 but the soil got real compacted even with boards and the water would just sit on the surface....

lis, just guess here...but think that Trailor is meaning...a lot of the work on a plant (especially when young and little) is done near the planting spot (stump)...if you plant them back to back you will be walking on (and compacting) that soil a lot. If you plant on each end, and grow towards each other, you can do the work without getting into the patch area as much. Hope this helps. How many plants were you planning in this 20x40 ft area? Sounds like you are planning on 4. That would mean only 200 sq ft per plant...cutting it sorta slim. Side vines (secondaries) on these plants easily grow 10 ft+ on each side.(and you don't want any vines crossing others). Once again...hope this helps!!! Peace, Wayne

Only two plants wayne, although I have two backups planted along the edge in case one of my main plants doesn't make it for some reason. I am going to have a really tough time terminating the backup plants when the time comes!
