I will be starting some seeds in a couple of weeks in peat pots. I have a raised bed that I will be planting them in. Because of that the vines need to go in a certain direction or they will spill out into the yard. How do I know which way to orientate the plant when I put it in the garden so that the vines go they way I want them to?

The vine typically runs in the opposite direction of the first true leaf. The first true leaf is the third leaf that appears. It is the leaf with the jagged edges rather than the rounded edged ones that first come out.

Right, I understand that. But how do I know which side it's going to run out of. I have a 400sqft raised bed that is triangle shaped. In order to maximize the area I need to plant against one of the sides. If I orientate the plant wrong then it will grow out into the yard instead of out into the garden, hence my dilemma.

If you grow towards the point of the triangle you can grow a normal christmas tree patterm. You can train vines in any direction. If you make the first true leaf point in to the direction of the yard then it wil grow in the garden you want.

i like to point my first true leaf towards the north. if you can't do that do like the cooks say.
