What is recomended here, you need a spray for the plants, and trench? you want something with malathion in it I think. Any suggestions would help. I'm mainly interested in fighting the vine borers, I did have a vine with borers in it last year. Will take any help, suggestions. Thanks

Richard...I used to have a lot of vine borer problems..do a search for Talstar One...It's readily available and allowed for use in many states. I sprayed it evey 10 days starting the beginning of June. Mark

I swear by Merit 75% and the generic Talstar as a mix, to nail the SVB's. VTJohn gave me his recipe and it seemed to do the job. 1/8 tsp of the Merit powder per gallon and 1/2 oz (one tablespoon) bifren (Talstar) per gallon. Spray 1-2 days before your 'date' of SVB emergence, and every 10 days after that.
Just beware about owning those chemicals, some places require a license. And I seriously suggest a dedicated sprayer for it. Paint respirator mask is manditory.

Tremor and some others on this board gave me a lot of good info last year.
I Hit the insects two different ways with systemic and topical pesticides. I use Bayer T&S 1.47 Imporid (Systemic pesticide) I apply this about every 4 to 5 weeks check my 08 I apply 4.5 ounces mixed in with a couple gallons of water to each plant. NOTE: You can buy the Bayer Tree & Shrub at lowes or Home Depot. Although I have not seen the exact stuff I used last year, The stuff I see out this year has a lower rate of Implorid and is mixed with a topical pesticide.
Then I hit the plants about every 7 to 10 days depending on the weather with ORTHO MAX (Bifen)Topical pesticide, you can buy the premixed just hook the hose sprayer up bottle or buy the bulk bottle at lowes, home depot, and about every H&G center. When I spray the plants I do not spray the very tip of the main and secs. I also do not spray this on my plants when they are young.
One other thing I did was purchased some grubx, it has Implorid in it. I applied this to the entire patch about 2 weeks before planting.
Last year, this Insect spray program worked prefect for me. The nice thing is all of the stuff i used is readily available at local stores and it is relatively cheap.

I also agree with Okiegal, Make sure you are not breathing that stuff in. I wear protective eyewear and a air mask when mixing and applying! Don't let you dog run around in the patch when you use those pesticides!!!

I have an entire 'suit' for head (hair) to toe protection, eye goggles rated for paint vapor, a paint vapor respirator, and rated chemical gauntlet gloves. You don't want to be near some of this stuff, and treat it like it is nasty. The $$$ for that respirator is so worth it for your general health and wellbeing. Also make sure that respirator is fitting correctly and seals! All pets and kids should be kept away from application, mix, and cleanup areas for the recommended time. Beware of your wind as well when you apply; I have ponds in the area and must be extremely careful.

Garlic powder or one of the garlic sprays is an effective, safe method to repell cucumber beetles. They can be just as bad as SVB.

o'k, I'm trying to narrow it down to one folliar and one for drenching, aimed primarily at svb's, without killing my plants.

1/2 oz talstar and 1/8 teaspoon merit 75 per gallon... Get top and bottom of leaves and hit the ground good with it, every 10 days from 4-5 days before your SVB date until end of Aug. Avoid getting growing tips, any blossom you want to use to fertilize, and not on the pumpkin. It gets about anything that wants to land on or chew on your vines.
VTjohn (John Young) gave me this recipe and it worked great last year. I should have sprayed one more time than I did, I did get a borer grub in one vine and lost about 7' of a secondary; I just cut it off and removed it completely. Wear paint vapor respirator, cover all your skin, wear chemical gloves, wash the 'spray clothes' afterwards.
I applied in the last two hours before sunset, and watered in the early morning lightly to wash any drench into the soil.

Merit 75 is the strength you need to buy, usually listed Merit 75WP...
1/8 teaspoon of the powder per gallon. Talstar is bifren and 1/2 oz per gallon. Mix both in the gallon. One gallon will spray one good sized vine plus. (about 1300-1500 square feet of plants)
Sorry if it was misreadable.
