Hello everyone; I just found your site today and am already hooked. I have been reading for several hours trying to learn enough to get started. I can't wait. I plan on getting the tiller out tomorrow and getting a good spot ready. At first I thought I would be behind, but I am seeing that most start their seeds in late April. Guess I still have time to get all the supplies I will need. Guess the warm weather in Houston has me ready for spring. I look forward to learning more from the more experienced growers out there.

starting pumpkins has a lot to do with where you live. you probably have an earlier starting time than we do in the north. your seasons start before ours. i know their are some growers in texas. not sure who they are. oakiegal is a little north of you, i'm sure she would be a great help. have you done a soil test yet? that is where you want to start. then ammend your soil accordingly. i was new last november. this is the best place on earth to get information and seeds.

big pumpkin is right, start with your soil. Get it tested now and someone here will help with your results. Without proper soil you won't get far with a giant pumpkin.

Houston is so far away and a few zones warmer, I know there are Texan growers closer. Soil test first, patch amendment, then worry about planting. You will definitely be starting earlier than even someone up my way.

hello neyjour, second year grower here far from a pro grower. Your probably zone 8 grower? Just note the sooner you set out your plants the sooner the mature. I set my out last year middle may, pollinated july 2 pumpkin was mature labor day . I am zone 7b. hope this helps. note might want to check daddy rabbit a grower in louisiana he is same zone as you. Good luck

Neyjour I am in Lafayette, LA and Paul F on this site is in Raywood, TX. daddy rabbit is in Lake Charles, LA. Any of us would be glad to help you out anyway we can. Paul and I just started our seeds this past weekend. If you wait much longer you will have too deal with the extreme heat down here.

Thanks for the replies. You mentioned starting them now. I was wanting to try for a giant jack o lantern for Halloween. When should I start so that it is ready, but not just sitting around waiting for something to happen to it.
Thanks again everyone
