Just wanted to know if anyone had an idea on making a cheap basement green house to start my seeds?

When we lived in Michigan I made a seed starting area in my basement. I used plastic for the walls, just suspended from the ceiling joist and regular new florecent lights. I also placed it near the furnace and made sure the heating vent was inside the make shift structure. Keep the lights at the correct height. Now I use a closet and heating pads to keep it warm. I also use blankets, or newpaper to regulate the temp of the heating pad. Worked great for me. I also use a small fan to keep the air moving.

What would you recommend for grow lights that won't burn my house down? And how high should the lights be from the top of the plant?

My grandfather used a spare bedroom then put aluminum foil around the walls in his area then he would put the light inside it. It looked weird but it worked and was cheap. he did get a little natuarl light that helped. plus he had the heating vent near the grenhouse area.

The floor he had an old canvace tarp.

pumpkins only need to be in the house about a week after germination, is all that really needed?

mid,no it isn't if you can give full natural light and a reasonable T after germination, every year we see pics of straggley plants grown on under insufficient artificial light. That doesn't mean you can't do it if you have a good enough artificial light of course.
