I am planning on trying these for the first time this year to help get a better start on things and was wondering if anyone knew a good place to get some without spending a fortune, how long it should be and the best way to use them in the patch? any info is welcome since im am clueless on the subject, Thanks

soil heating cables are a great advantage early season. they keep the soil around the seedling at a constant 72 degrees. they really give the young plants roots a growth boost early on.not expensive either. we just use the small 6 ft ones . good enough to wrap a circle or two around the new planting about 6 to 8 inches below the soils surface. dont let the wires touch each other or the plastic coating could be melted. pap

is it a good idea to leave the cables in the ground to prevent risk of damaging the root by removing them and to help heat the soil in the later season?

yes ---- never pull the cables until the plant is all done for the season.
