I want to grow big pumpkins that are good looking as well as big. And I guess the first thing is to decide what kind of pumpkin to grow? I have no idea what kind as I am a complete novise..lol Any suggestions will be great! ( and plez dont be mean, this is for my son)

What a great idea..... Lot of pretty growers here....

First of all, you need to choose Atlantic Giant variety pumpkin for Big one !!!

But the most important work is to have a good soil....many growers will agree with me .....

You need a large patch with good soil, then get some Atlantic Giant seed from a grower here. I'm going to tell a few growers that I think are in your area you want to get started in growing....

I was a first year grower in 2008 and you already have an advantage on me because you posted the right question on this board to get you started. A lot of great people on this board willing to help you out and give you good seeds. Start building the soil where you will be planting now if you already haven't done so. Start with a soil test to see what your soil needs first. Ask growers on this forum what to add to the soil if you need any help. If you like you can go to my pumpkin blog and see my entire season and what I did. I'm not the best grower but I did a lot of the right things this year. You can view the blog at www.denverpumpkins.com. When you are trying to decide what seed to grow look at the crosses and photos in the grower diaries of the pumpkins to see what the pumpkins look like. Certain pumpkins tend to grow the more orange pumpkins (i.e. 810 Dill, 772 Porier, etc.). The number is the weight of the pumpkin and the name is the last name of the grower who grew the pumpkin. When looking at the genetics of the pumpkin you will see things like 1556 Rodonis (1450 Wallace x 1231 Pukos). What all of the names and numbers mean is that the 1556 Rodonis was grown from a seed that came from the 1450 Wallace pumpkin (the female) and was pollinated with the 1231 Pukos (the male). So if you see a pumpkin that you really like the look of then you should find a seed from the female portion of the cross and that is the seed you probably want to grow.
