As a Newbie to Big pumpkins I have arrived with a megaton of questions and I'm sure there's nowhere else on earth with the body of knowledge this forum contains. One thing that puzzles me(actually most things)is the pervasive concern about pumpkins making it to weigh off before they rot. Is there some defect with the big ones that accellerates their decomposition? For the record ,the squirrils just finished up my last shell-less seed pumpkins last week. These pumpkins were harvested in mid july..... of 2007, and were in great shape when they were eaten.

growing a giant pumpkin is not your average run of the mill garden crop. your growing a freak of nature. one that will grow anywhere from 15 to 45 pounds per day at it peak. the fruit and plant are under a lot of stress during large portions of the season. disease and insects are more apt to cause problems than they would if you were growing egg plant, tomatoes or suger baby pumpkins. its the nature of the beast. if it were easy everyone would have monster pumpkins in there gardens.
