As to WHAT caused this split to start the next day after this fruit was pollinated??? I came to this forum trying to get an answer & what to do to keep it from happening if I try growing "big" next year.I had several do this , but have no idea WHY. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=90004

It could be the wet weather. It could also be a lack of available calcium Disease might have caused your larger one to rot (the one on the chair)

The one thing I can do nothing about.....the weather......it has been real wet.......pretty bad when mushrooms start popping up all over.

With Comments like this,
This may be my final entry.........all but 1 of the big moons are rotting..........whoever the moron was that came up with using silicone sealant for splits should loose all their crop........that was the WORST idea yet...
And like this
I think next year I'll use that land to grow beans , potatoes & tomatoes........the things we can't afford to buy now........can't save any money fooling around with pumpkins.
Do you really expect people to help you on here?

Thanks to ALL who repilied , especially Tango(Phil).....your remarks were very enlightening to me about the grower's "diary"........I mistakenly thought it was a true diary for me to place my experiences & thoughts & learn from my mistakes.......I wasn't aware the WHOLE WORLD could read what I had entered. So , therefore , if anybody feels they have been offended by what I THOUGHT were MY private thoughts that I entered during times of frustration , I sincerely apologize.

Zippy12 I am pretty certain that everyone on here has felt the same as you felt at times, I know I have. I am glad that you took the time out to apologize. That is the only thing you have to keep in mind on this site, once you have posted anything , you can not edit or delete it. I am sure others will learn from your oversight. Good luck with the rest of the season.

How did you come up with "I wasn't aware the WHOLE WORLD could read what I had enterd" and "MY private thoughts" When you read what others wrote during there diary.

The silicon is only meant to be used as a way to keep a doomed pumpkin growing as long as possible. Hopefully to get some mature seeds for their genetics, etc.
If the split does not go into the cavity, silicon would not likely be used (as in your case...the pumpkins were way to small to worry about, cull them and pollinate more). If the split is in the cavity, silicon plugs it to ensure no air gets in...but the fruit is already on its way down. Might get a few extra hundred pounds, but you wont get an official weight.
