as my pumpkins are getting bigger it is lifting the vine up i have already cut the roots on either side but should the vine itself be supported????

We use styrofoam blocks under the vines on either side of the pumpkin so that it's not just hanging from the stem. You should also cut off the secondary that's across from your pumpkin if you haven't already.

I also cut some secondary vine roots next to the pumpkin to relieve the stress on the stem. If styrofoam blocks are hard to come by, I use water noodles (you know, the ones kids swim on) and cut them to the required height.
