Being I am a new grower { or wannabee grower } I planted too many plants in too small of an area. Is it ok to cut off the secondaries that are growing into the plants next to them?

It is better to trim the vines than let them gorw into a tangled mess.

Secondaries stay..terminated at 12-15 ft long...third growth is cut off..that is what becomes a tangled mess.Mark

If you don't have enough room for at least 6' of secondaries you might want to pull every other plant

If it is more desired to have the fruits grwon on the main vine, then what is the benefit of the secondaries?

the secondaries are feeder roots that bring food source and such back to the main . the main passes it down to the fruit.
during late season the pumpkin (its a giant sink ) will draw nutrients and such from any area of the plant that can supply it.(growth before or after the fruit makes no difference)

ok now I get it, thanks pap, and everyone else. One more question: Is there a time when I should apply potash? I have a bag of espoma potash. I thought I read somewhere where it said I should apply this in august?
