This is what we collectively refer to as an "abort". This is an unsuccessful pollination. It can be due to a number of reasons. Heat, improper pollinatation technique, timing, or just a picky attitude on behalf of the pumpkin can lead to this problem. This serves as a reinforcing lesson regarding the value of setting multiple fruit on one plant and then waiting to make a decision as to which fruit will be "the one" until they have reached day 15 or 20. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for reply & information.......I'm glad I read somewhere on this forum about not rushing to pick the "one".....I have two others set on that vine......1 bigger , 1 smaller............the one pictured was at day 13.
thanks again.
I've learned soo much here.
