Another way to tell is to look at the color of the flower. It will turn from the standard light green to a yellow color a day before opening.

Also,look at the shape of the female flower. Its conical in shape right up to the day before the flower is going to open. On the day before the flower will open, it turns into a more rounded shape with the bottom of the flower "poofing out". Looks just like the males do when the get all "poofy" the night before opening.
