Most people do not, they worry about stump rot. Personally I do not bury the stump but that is based on what I have heard not first hand experience. I wonder if burying the stump would cut down on all the pesky little tertiary vines that pop up later in the season.

never bury the stump. you should cover the main and sides early on especially because buring encourages tap root development and also makes it harder for squash vine borers to enter the vines. go back in early august after borers are gone and uncover top half of main abd a few feet of each side vine so you can inspect the vines occasionally for problems

burying does not eliminate third stage growth. you still need to pluck them off the secondaries when they are small (usually we do this when vine burying the secondaries)
