Why does this have to be tamed close to the ground?

It doesn't have to be. Pumpkin vines will climb if given something to climb. The reason they're usually kept close to the ground is to prevent damage, mostly from wind.

Also the vine will grow more roots and be able to get more energy.

Also, if it grows straight up as some due, they may snap in half when they get too tall/heavy to hold themselves up. Thus, keeping them close to the ground reduces that possibility. Good luck
