I have several questions about when to stop letting vine grow. I have heard that several growers stop the main from growing once the pumpkin is growing. 1. How far behind the pumpkin do you cut the main. 2. Have their been any studies that show that vines/leaves after the pumpkin help or contribute tho the size of fruit. 3. Do you still allow secondaries to grow out beyond where fruit set. 4. Would cutting just behind pumpkin help eliminate stress on stem as pumpkin begins growing pulling up vine with it.
I have three pumpkins set on the main and the vine on one plant goes out another 8-10' from the last pumpkin. So I am curious if all this plant behind the pumpkin is going to do anything for the fruit or if it is going to otherwise take energy away. Am I making any sense?

Many pumpkins have continued to grow after lossing the stump side of the vine. The plant needs to store it's produce somewhere. If you only have one pumpkin on this will be the storage spot. the vine will backfeed to the sink. Also late in the season these leaves are generally the more pristine leaves.
