Paul, no real way to know what went wrong...but a couple of semi-rookie suggestions. Don't use peat pots. Test soil (or starting mix) for moisture by squeezing a handful, if more than a couple drops of water come out...it's too wet. Test starting temp w/soil therm. needs to be 85F or so. 1st guess would be, cots are yellow, cause they never saw sunlight, and root rotted from too much moisture...but just a guess!!! How long was yer soak time? Hope this helps!! Peace, Wayne

Paul, btw...I use 1-1.5 gals w/a sterilized starting mix, inside of a temp controlled germination chamber., and count on that size container to be good for only about 10 days b/4 the plant needs to be in the patch!!! Peace, Wayne

I think this is a form of what we call club root. I have had this happen a couple of times, when germinating with the paper towel zipp-loc bag method. After the seed split open like you described I went ahead and planted it in a container and in a couple of days the seed came up. I don't think you did anything wrong, it just happens like this sometimes.
