I may be way ahead of myself, but what do you do with a 500lb pumpkin, or better, after the weigh in? I guess I didn't think this all the way through, my husband has just collapsed on the floor laughing about it. He is so excited because he knows what happened to our pumpkin this last Oct. He carved the grossest (is that a word) pumpkin, and just when I thought it couldn't get worse, I came home one night to find slugs crawling in and out of it. For him, that was the best part, gave it even more of a gross Halloween flavor. Now he is counting on getting to carve the "big one" and tons of giant slugs. Hmmm.... I didn't think about that. He is so happy this morning just planning for carving.

Carve it up with a Sawzall or similar. A 500 pounder will have walls that are 4-6 inches thick. Once Halloween is over, cut it up and compost or fill the green waste bin. Some people are concerned that composting could put diseases back into the patch if any were contained in the pumpkin, others don't, really a personal choice. I have a creek behind my house and we toss them over the side.

If you don't carve it and it is sound, it will likely last past Thanksgiving and even into the new year in cool weather.

Killer Jack-O-lantern. I used a manual pruning saw from Sears. Folds in half for safe storage. Cuts nice. All the kids in the neighborhood came over to help dig out seeds and inerts. Great time. Haloween was fun. Everyone loved it. Also, some make boats out of them. Fill the bottom with sand or rocks for stability.

blow it up, i blew up my 67 pounder this past fall with a k-1000 firecracker and pieces flew 30 feet.

you'll need something with power if you want to blow up a 500#er. quarter stick will barely crack the shell of a 200#er, so you're probably looking at a pound or 2 can of black powder with a long fuse in it.

OK..Ed's idea is more fun, but we donated the smallest 3 or 4 to local soup kitchens & they ate the things. The shell of my own Halloween yard sitter (731 lbs) was dispatched under the shrubs in the landscape where it makes good free fertilizer. The fate of the other 3 is unknown :o( but I suspect they made landfills or compost piles.
