Do you use a regular file for wood, a lady's finger nail file? and are you super careful doing it or do you think it matters a whole lot. I'm getting itchy for spring.

I use sand paper. Preferrably a finer grade.

I agree with Doug. You want to take enough of the sides off for water to saturate in but you don't want to go so deep you see seed leaves. Don't sand the point either. If you have extra seeds it is good to practice before you do it on an expensive seed. Also if the seed has a white seed coat I typically just soak it with out filing. John

emery board works fine. File the round sides and stay away from the pointy side, that is where the root grows out. this just makes it easier and safer for the leaves to make it out of the shell when it sprouts.

I though the emery board worked great but took alot of time, and the wood file was done after one or two swipes but to damaging to the seed.

Nothing. I never damaged the cots by NOT filing.

Petman I do the same thing and it works great. Richard B just practice with some old seeds and youll be able to file with your eyes closed all though I wouldnt reccomend it.

Petman, do you really approve of Jason using your wife's pink fingernail file? How did he know it was where you said?

Best thing I have found is a drywall sanding block. Like a foam block with paper already around it. Works way better than anything else I have tried. You can essentially hold the block and rub the seed on it, rather than trying to file a seed.

That's why I like sand paper as well Jordan. I rub the seed on the sandpaper, not the sandpaper on the seed.

Teeth..... .nothing like gettin a "taste" for what is gonna grow!!! LOL Seriously...a metal nail file works as good as anything...just watch for the color to change on the edges of the seeds, no matter what you use...chain saw or nail file...the color changes, and then you are ready to do the damp (not too wet) warm paper towel thing!!! The best of germinations for all!!! Try it early!!! and it gets easy?? Hoping all yer seeds germinate in 08!!! Peace, Wayne
