Could someone explain thoroughly how the crosses/lineage of the pumpkin is determined. I have noticed that people give the name and weight of the pumpkin and sometimes both of the parents of that pumpkin. For example say the hypothetical 1000 Smith is from the 900 Jones and the 1100 Miller. In this made up example the 900 Jones is the source of pollen and the 1100 Miller was the vine that the 1000 Smith grew on. Would the 900 Jones be the name of some previous years pumpkin where the seed came from that produced the pollen or is it the name of the pumpkin that grew on the vine that was the source of pollen? Maybe this an easier way to state my question, was the 900 Jones pumpkin grown in the same year as the 1000 Smith or in a previous year and the seed from it was grown the same year as the 1000 Smith?

Let me know if you guys would like me to try and restate my question, I realize it might not be worded in the best way possible.

In 2006, seeds from the following 2 pumpkins are planted:
998 Werner 05 (weight of pumpkin, name of grower, year grown)
344 Hoffman 05

Female flower on 998 plant is pollinated with pollen from 344 plant & pumpkin grows to 833 lb. The result is:
833 Hoffman 06 (998 Werner 04 x 344 Hoffman 05)

Female flower on 344 plant is pollinated with pollen from 998 plant & pumpkin grows to 815 lb. The result is:
815 Hoffman 06 (344 Hoffman 05 x 998 Werner 04)

Is that what you were after?
