A sloshy pumpkin doesn't sound good to me. This normally means rotting from the inside out.

Shannon, same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. And I'm trying to understand it. I was wondering if you could shed some light on it. Does it start rotting after it stops growing? Or does it stop growing because it's rotting. Thanks Kenny

a healthy pumpkin will last for months if the conditions are right an unhealthy pumpkin can go down at ant time during or just after the season we had a 500 pounder several years ago that stopped growing in mid august.sat in the patch just hooked up to a small piece of main vine until we sold it for a porch pumpkin in early oct we retrived the seeds out of it early november and that seed went on to be the 500 wallace which grew many pumpkins over 1,000 pounds in the next few years its a crap shoot at best. all the fungicides and sestemics in the world will help but in the end its still a crap shoot pap

Jim, Mine lasted about 10 days. And when you open it up, it is really going to smell. And I don't mean smell like roses. lol I wish I would have hauled it off before I cut it open. Good luck. Kenny

Trust me a rotten pumpkin is not something you will want to smell. It's nasty! I just dealt with one this weekend, and it's mushy and very stinky! That smell does not go away in a hurry either. If you remove it, put it some place where you won't catch wind of it somewhere, it's really nasty!

Pap, can you provide some numbers on how many go down in a season, and how many do you count on to make up for it? If you know what i mean? Say you want 2-3 good Giants, how many plants do you plant for the pumpkins you want?
For example, I planted 4 plants in basically 1200 sq ft patch, and had one giant per plant. I am down to one pumpkin and it's the last one that pollinated in late June/July sometime. I'm wondering if I should have done a bit more in the strategy department, ie, 2 pumpkins per plant and see which one goes down first? Just curious? Any suggestions?
