I started late and my #2 plant's primary is around 4-5 feet now. A tendril reached out off of the primary vine near the end and grabbed onto a firm secondary close to the root. It ended up cracking the primary vine as it starting winding while the vine grew away. I have a secondary that is starting to extend in the other direction nicely. What is my best move to do at the crack?

PS: These are my first ever giant pumpkin plants and I think that my first BOTH male and female flowers on my #1 plant may open tomorrow morning! Very exciting!

If the crack is bad you might be best off using the secondary vine as a new main. Depends on how bad the crack is.

Have fun regardless. There is no pressure on new growers.

i am a new grower og a.g.'s this year, and i feel i have pressure of not messing up and making stupid mistakes

Pumpkin Newbie, You coming up to Ipswich for our (NEGPGA) picnic and patch tour? A wealth of information is there from growers all over NE. Plus you will se a bunch of patches. Ask anyone one here, when you go to a patch tour you have the brains to pick over and you will learn a ton. If your interested let me know. If you didn't grow a 1300 pounder last year NO one expects you to do it this year. That's why there's no presure. The heavy hitters have that pressure because if they bring anything less to the scale than they brought last year. Some clown in the back of the crowd will say "boy he had a bad year".

I'm a second year grower, last year my only pumpkin was 151 lbs. The only body I have pressure from is myself & my 2 little girls.

You are only half way through your first season, you have so much to learn. If you make a stupid mistake (as you put it) you'll learn from that mistake and be better for it. But because of the pressure a heavy hitter has on there shoulders he can't picks up the sprayer with round-up in it instead of the merit.

Now if you pop out a 1175 lber, like Dan Bowles did his rookie season. You'll then have some pressure in 2008.

OK, thanks I will go with the secondary but please really explain what to do with the primary. Do I cut it off just before the break with some shears and bury the end?

This is only my second year. I made so many mistakes my first year I could write a book. My PB was 93lbs. This year I am at 260lbs on day 35, so I am quite pleased. On pace for 800-1000 but I will be happy with whatever I get. Good luck.
