should the vine near the pumpkin be burried like the rest of the vines?

i read not to bury it and to cut the roots near the fruit so it does not break at the stem?

is this correct?

You are going to need that slack later..So no do not bury and create a curve now for slack.

Yeah Shannon was right on your gonna need some slack as the pumpkin grows. Get your vine loose as a goose if you plan on growing a big one.

I try and leave about 3-4 ft.(or more)of vine on each side of the pumpkin unburied. As Shannon said, the curve creates slack in the vine, and room for the shoulders to grow. The keeper pumpkin should be on the outside of the curve.

This "burying the vine" thing is new to me...can someone help? I have a 12ft vine with only one other 3' offshoot vine from the base of the 12foot vine. Can you please explain what exactly I should be burying?
Thanks!

Jay,

Burying the vines help keep SVB at bay. I bury a couple feet behind the tip everyday, Look at it as burying the growth from the day before yesterday.

Everyday I stake the new growth with plastic coat hangers cut in half, to train the main vine to grow with curves in it to creats slack in the vine. You will need the slack when you get a pumpkin growing. Then when I bury my vine I try to bury between the leaf nodes. I leave the nodes exposed for a couple days till the flowers and secondarys pop up then I do back and bury the leaf nodes also. I do this for main & add secondary vines.

Good luck,

Kenny
